Fun facts about the Eiffel Tower
The makers of the special monument
The Eiffel Tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel’s company. Gustave Eiffel was a successful engineer from France. Construction of the monument began in 1887. It took about two years before it was completely finished. It was only officially opened on May 6, 1889. This was because of the so-called ‘World’s Fair’ of 1889. The World’s Fair was a series of exhibitions held in different countries. As a participant during such an exhibition, each country showed part of its economic, cultural, social and technical development. It was a real achievement for this period to complete such a construction within two years. However, the elevators were not yet in use in the first week. Nevertheless, 28,922 people managed to reach the top by climbing. About 50 years later (in 1937) the tower was modernized. Outdated decoration was removed and the monument was given more lighting.
The height of the Eiffel Tower changes continuously
The tower is no less than 317 meters high (without television antennas). With these antennas, the construction is 324 meters high in total. Due to its height, the monument can be seen from many popular locations in the city. The third floor is a little lower than the top. This is located at an altitude of about 276 meters. However, the exact height is variable; in total this can change by about 15 centimeters due to weather conditions. The metal construction shrinks when the outside temperature is low. At warm temperatures the material expands, making the monument slightly larger. In total, the structure weighs more than 7,000 tons. The monument is regularly illuminated to give the metal construction a warmer appearance.
Special light shows
On New Year’s Eve 2000, the tower had its first flashing lights. This gave the monument a special and warm appearance. Because of its atmospheric added value, the Eiffel Tower is now illuminated in this way every day. This happens from nine o’clock in the evening, where the tower is illuminated with twinkling lights every hour for a few minutes. However, on New Year’s Eve, fireworks will not be let off from the Eiffel Tower for safety reasons. On July 14, fireworks are set off from the Eiffel Tower.
