Top 50 oldest churches in Zeeland

About fifty old medieval churches have been preserved in Zeeland. The oldest churches in Zeeland still have Romanesque elements or were built according to the slightly younger Brick Gothic style. A little later, the Scheldt Gothic, characteristic of this region, came into vogue. The top fifty oldest churches in Zeeland include all medieval churches in Zeeland insofar as any original parts of the church have been preserved.

Criteria for inclusion in the list

To be included in this list, a church must meet a number of conditions. Firstly, the construction of the church must have occurred before 1500 AD. have started. Only medieval churches are included in this list. Another condition is that the church must be partly in its original state. This criterion was taken quite broadly when compiling the list. Even if only a modest part of the church remains in the original style, it is included in the list.

Dating age of church

This list is arranged by year of construction. To be more precise, the year in which construction of the church started. It may of course have happened that the construction of a church stood still for many decades before it was completed. However, for this list it is more interesting to use the start date of construction. Furthermore, it is not known exactly when construction started for most churches. Historians and archaeologists have often had to make an estimate based on architectural style, use of materials or dendrological data (growth rings in the wood). In fact, many churches ended up as equal in the list, because the date of foundation is only known approximately.
Data from the Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) was used to compile the list. Despite the careful compilation, the list may not be complete. This is possible because the construction date of a church can be adjusted through historical research or because the correct data are not yet known in 2016.

Oldest church in Zeeland: Sint-Bavo in Aardenburg

The oldest church in Zeeland is the Sint-Bavo church in Aardenburg. St. Bavo, also often called St. Bavo, was built from the year 1220 on the remains of an even older church. Some parts of the floor may be older than 1,000 years. Truly the oldest church in Zeeland and leader of the top fifty.
The church is the only one in Zeeland that was built in pure Scheldt Gothic. Typical Scheldt Gothic elements in the church are the three-part west window, the aisle in front of the early Gothic lancet-shaped nave windows and the columns with button capitals. Very special in the church are the burial vaults, which are decorated with 14th-century paintings of, among other things, the crucifixion and the Blessed Virgin. The church is owned by the RCE.

Court in Zandekerk Kloosterzande

The Hof te Zandekerk in Aardenburg is the second oldest church in Zeeland. The date of foundation is around the year 1250. The church was built in a special style, namely the so-called Brick Gothic, a Romano-Gothic transitional style that made extensive use of bricks. This style emerged late in the twelfth century, because people had learned relatively recently to make good quality brick from clay. This made the import of the much more expensive tuff unnecessary. Unfortunately, no other examples of this old style can be found in Zeeland.
Originally, the Hof te Zandekerk was part of a much larger monastery complex. This monastery, which was founded by the monastic order of the Cistercians, was called the Hof te Zande, hence the name of the church. The church was severely damaged during the Eighty Years’ War. In 1579, what is now called Zeeuws-Vlaanderen was the front line between the partly Protestant north and the Catholic south. Traveling Beggars destroyed many Catholic churches in Kloosterzande and the rest of Zeeland. The church was rebuilt again in 1609, largely with the same style features. The choir of the church in particular has the same style features that are characteristic of the Brick Gothic.
The church also experienced periods of decline in later years. At the beginning of the 20th century, the decay was such that in 1922 it was proposed to demolish the church in its entirety. Fortunately, they decided differently and the church was extensively restored.

Geerteskerk in Kloetinge

Third place is taken by the Geerteskerk in Kloetinge. The village of Kloetinge is an old settlement from the 10th century and is partly built on a mound. This is a special fact for Zeeland. The Vliedbergen outside the village, often dating from the 8th and 9th centuries, are relatively common in Zeeland.
At the highest point of the mound is the Geerteskerk, whose choir was built between 1250 and 1300 AD. The nave of the church and the tower date from a slightly later date.
