Snow-guaranteed winter sports in Obertauern – Austria

The Obertauern ski area is located in the Austrian province of Salzburgerland and is approximately 1015 kilometers from Utrecht. The area can be reached via the Austrian motorway A10 and the B99. There are various descents within the ski area for both beginners and advanced skiers. The village of Obertauern is located at approximately 1700m and this altitude makes the area very snow-sure.

It is also possible to return to the village using the valley descents. Anyone who has finished skiing in the Obertauern ski area can still move on to the ski areas of Fanningberg and Grosseck – Speiereck. Both ski areas have a total of approximately 80 kilometers of slopes. The slopes of these ski areas end in the wide Lungau valley.

Tauern Pass

Obertauern is actually situated on the Tauern Pass which reaches an altitude of 1739m. The village is actually nothing more than a collection of hotels and holiday apartments and therefore lacks a real village-like and warm appearance. The majority of the buildings are located on the main road of the valley. The ski area is guaranteed of snow due to its altitude, but if there is too little snow in the region, Obertauern can become very busy. It can also become busy on the Tauern Pass because everyone drives up and back via the same road.

Cross-country skiing in Obertauern

The area has more to offer than just skiing. Cross-country skiers will also get their money’s worth. In the Obertauern region there are several cross-country trails that run through beautiful landscapes, including:

  • Hundsfeld trail – 6 kilometers
  • Weltcuploipe – 10 kilometers
  • Cross-country ski trail Twenger Au – 23 kilometers

In total, the area has more than 50 kilometers of cross-country ski trails. In addition to cross-country skiing, it is also possible to go tobogganing in the ski area. Various hiking trails have also been cleared for hikers. The hiking trails lead through the mountains but also around the village. The views from Obertauern in most directions are beautiful.

Village Obertauern

There are plenty of options for a bite to eat in the village of Obertauern. There are also several bars where you can have a drink. There are also plenty of facilities to eat while skiing on and around the slopes. In addition, there are also options in the village of Obertauern to rent accommodation for a short or long period of time. It is also possible to book accommodation in nearby Mautendorf or Tweng. In the village of Obertauern and the surrounding villages there are also plenty of opportunities to rent winter sports equipment for short or long periods of time. Après-ski is also available, although slightly smaller than, for example, Saalbach – Hinterglemm and Kaprun.

Snow guaranteed

Due to its high location, the ski area is extremely reliable with snow, the lower slopes only start at around 1600 meters. In mild winters with little snow, the ski area is assured of snow due to its altitude. The eastern location of the ski area also makes it colder than at the same altitudes in the ski areas of France. Due to the high snow certainty, the ski season runs from November to the end of April.
